My first trip back after a few weeks of non-Dead related stuff, only to find some serious tension amongst some recognizable handles. It doesn't do much good to name names or affix blame, take sides or even call for calm...we all have free-will to post as we see fit. But there's a bottom line that we all seem to have lost sight of, and I'm as guilty as the rest.

We all are guests in this venue that's been so graciously provided by our host. What's even more gracious is that or host has seen fit not to have a monitor ride herd on this particular board which allows every one of us the opportunity to say what we wish.

Ultimately though, the nature of this undertaking is to provide a repository that is a refection of our times through various forms of media. The Grateful Dead collection is just a small part of a much larger effort. I believe it's both practical and righteous to keep in mind that there's actually a purpose for the existance of this collection. Not to mention that people are at work to make it happen.

In addition, funding has to come from somewhere to allow ths Archive to flourish. I don't know about the rest of you, but if I were asked to contribute to the Archives and used this forum as an example of where my funding dollars were going...I would probably find a better use for my philanthropy.

While I'm as guilty as the next guy when it comes to ball busting and questionable humor, it would probably be a great idea for all of us to remember that we are indeed guests of a sort here. That the original intent was to have a place where honest discussions related to our passionate following of the band we love best takes place. I'm thankful it's here.

Missed you of late around here, Mr. Earl.

Amazingly, a thread can unfold when you least expect it, with nothing but proper forum behavior of the highest order, so that you decide you can come back in spite of the other crap. Or maybe it is a short and sweet technical tidbit of advice for a lost and struggling newbie that makes you appreciate the kindness that can still shine through at this place.

I couldn't agree more about the need for all of us to take the long view--a small appreciation of the fact that we are in some small way carrying the banner for the band we all love and share, and as such, should think of our interactions hereabouts as requiring a modicum of decorum lest we screw it up and have the whole thing taken away, or worse, viewed as petty, small minded and down right worthless...
